Hi-Way 80 Sales Questions and Answers

Oct. 17,18,19, 2008

View the Current Hwy. 80 Information

The US 80 Hi-way Sales will bring about various questions from people. Hopefully these answers will help to give them a better understanding of the event.

Q. How do I become a VENDOR? A. Anyone can be a vendor by simply having a yard sale in their yard, at their business or setting up in designated vendor places. Many communities have have different places where vendors from within and outside of that town or city can set up a booth. The main thing is to be sure you have permission from the landowner to set up a booth. Usually the more the merrier therefore clusters of vendors may be found along the route.

Q. What can I SELL? A. Almost anything. Junk, furniture, books, arts & crafts, paintings, toys, old farm equipment, tools, records, dishes and glassware, photo equipment, bicycles, motorcycles, boats, cars, trailers are all desirable items. Some things to consider, however, are business licenses and health department permits. Each town has different rules and regulations so persons should be sure to check with the local City Hall and Health Department where they set up their booth for any licenses or permits they may need to purchase.

Q. WHERE will the YARD SALES be?A. Yard sales will be found along the route at homes located on the designated route, in business parking lots, along side streets adjacent to the route, in wide open fields and pastures (remember, these roads pass through beautiful rural areas with farms and ranches and some of the most beautiful scenery you will find anywhere), and basically anywhere people can find to set up. Some areas will have large numbers of vendors in one group, others may be scattered and in some instances you may travel for several miles or more without seeing a yard sale because of the distances between homes on the country roads.

Q. Q. Where does it BEGIN and where do I PARK? A. The current length of the sale takes you from Bossier City LA to Grand Prairie. Visitors may decide to start at the western end and travel east or right the opposite. Or they may decide to jump on board anywhere in between. Parking may be limited in some areas to virtually impossible in other places to ample. It depends on the area. VERY IMPORTANT - be cautious of the driver in front of you and pedestrians on the roadway - be patient and a parking space will present itself.

Q. What TIME do the SALES BEGIN? A. Each vendor is on their own and can choose when he wants to begin but typically vendors would be active by 8:00 a.m. and operate until late in the evening.

Q. WHO ORGANIZES these events? A. This event was created by East Texas Tourism Association in Longview at the request of its members. It relies on community support from each town and/or county tourism and chamber office to promote the events in their area. The success of the sales depend on coordination from each community. ETTA is encouraging the formation of US 80 Chapters in each city and county.

Q. What does it COST to participate? A. There is no fee to participate; however, some vendor spaces may charge a nominal rental fee to allow you to set up a booth.

Q. Is there an ADMISSION FEE? A. NO. You should never have to pay admission. The events were not set up for that purpose.

Q. How long will it take me to get from point A to point B? A. That depends on how disciplined you are and how much ground you want to travel in one day. If you have to stop at every yard sale then it may take you awhile. It is easy enough to "cruise" the yard sales and travel a modest distance but it also easy to get caught up in the event and spend three to four hours in one area. Pre-Plan. Decide in advance how much time you want to spend in each area and try to stick with your plan. But most of all - have a good time and enjoy the sights and sounds.

Here are more US 80 Hi-Way Sale tips:

  • 1. Be very cautious of other vehicles. You will often find yourself looking off on the sides of the road at the yard sales and before you know it the vehicle in front of you has come to a stop. Be alert. Watch for pedestrians. Keep driveway clear for incoming and exiting traffic.
  • 2. Some cities may have ordinances on frequency of "garage" sales & taxes.
  • 3. Vendors should display Hi-Way Sale signs and parking directions if necessary. See US 80 Hi-Way 80 Sale sign attached. Make sure roadside parking is legal and safe.
  • 4. Items in your sale should be clean. Used clothing is not a desirable item for your sale. Pecans, vegetables, fudge, candies and drinks are desirable.
  • 5. Keep your money box in a safe place. Have a business card or address info to give to visitor.
  • 6. Have local maps and area brochures of lodging and dining and area attractions to give to visitors.
  • 7. Keep your storefront, yard and driveway clean. If you do not have public facilities, know where they are.
  • 8. Keep a record of where your visitors are from.
  • 9. Have emergency telephone numbers readily available. Know where auto repair is available on weekends.
  • 10. Provide plastic bags and boxes to shoppers.
  • 11. Where possible, have a small tent or covered area in case of rain
  • 12. Send all lost and found items to local police station.
